La Grande Dame is Veuve Clicquot’s prestige cuvée, named for Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin, who took over the house as a widow at twenty-seven in 1805 and invented the riddling table that made clear champagne possible. It is Pinot Noir dominant from the house’s historic grand cru holdings, and only made in the best years. From 1995, an excellent vintage, and thirty years on it will be deeply toasty and nutty. Two bottles in a wooden presentation box. Serve at 10-12C in a white wine glass.
