Gigondas sits under the Dentelles de Montmirail, the jagged limestone teeth that rise above the southern Rhône, and its vineyards climb high enough that the wines keep their freshness in spite of the heat. It is Grenache led with Syrah and Mourvèdre, and has long been the appellation people buy when Châteauneuf gets too expensive. Two thousand and eighteen was warm and generous. Black cherry, garrigue, liquorice, pepper and a stony finish over firm tannin. Decant two hours, serve at 16-17C.
